Birds of a Feather is an original textile mixed media artwork created with layered fabric, printed paper elements, and crystals on cradled birch panel. Part of my Quirky Birds series within the Whimsical Companions Collection — characters who exist joyfully on their own terms, built entirely from layered fabric with a personality all their own — this vibrant and exuberant piece celebrates connection, individuality, and the quiet joy of finding your perfect companion.

Two magnificently bold bird characters stand side by side with the easy confidence of creatures who have long since made peace with being exactly who they are. On the left, a dramatically round and fiery bird constructed from vivid crimson and hot pink fabric radiates outward in a wild halo of spiky feather forms — its body alive with painted botanical detail in teal and grey that gives the surface an extraordinary layered complexity. A dramatic crest of yellow, chartreuse, and deep pink fabric fans upward with theatrical flair, topped with a spray of iridescent crystal feather detail that catches light like scattered rainbows. Iridescent multicolored fabric wing panels — teal, gold, and soft blue — extend from both sides with a shimmering, moth-like beauty. The eyes are rendered in simple expressive fabric with a watchful, wide-eyed gaze. On the right, a rounder and more grounded companion stands in deep burgundy and maroon herringbone fabric — its body rich and velvety in tone, offset by vibrant multicolored wing panels in pink, orange, teal, and gold botanical prints that add a joyful burst of pattern and energy. Small fabric ear tufts in orange and multicolor fabric give it a wonderfully owlish quality. Both birds stand on olive and gold fabric feet that plant them firmly and comically on the ground. Printed paper botanical branch elements with delicate purple flowers drift across the upper background and lower corners, adding a storybook garden atmosphere. The background is a soft cream diamond lattice fabric — refined and airy, the perfect stage for two birds who need absolutely no backdrop to make an entrance.
