A Curious Journey is an original textile mixed media artwork created entirely from layered fabric on cradled birch panel. Part of my Quirky Birds series within the Whimsical Companions Collection — characters who exist joyfully on their own terms, built entirely from layered fabric with a personality all their own — this piece captures a moment of gentle purpose, a whimsical companion setting out with curiosity and a lighthearted spirit.
A wonderfully round bird strides forward with quiet confidence — its oversized circular body constructed from two distinct fabric layers that give it a wonderfully layered, target-like silhouette. An outer ring of olive and mustard fabric dotted with hot pink polka dots wraps the body in a cheerful, unexpected frame, while the inner circle is filled with a lively geometric print in teal, gold, lavender, and soft blue — triangles and angles that give the body a modern, energetic quality. A deep magenta striped fabric sweeps across the center of the body like a bold sash — grounding the composition with warmth and direction. A small fabric crest of pink blooms tops the head with a delicate flourish, while the eye is rendered in simple, expressive fabric with a dark center that holds a quiet, focused gaze. A small orange triangle beak points forward with purpose. Bold black fabric legs carry the bird forward in mid-stride, one leg raised and stepping out with easy confidence, ending in a single red fabric boot that plants firmly on the ground. In one wing, a walking stick of wood-grained fabric is held with the casual assurance of a traveller who knows exactly where they are going — or perhaps does not mind at all where they end up. The background is a softly swirling cream and gold scrollwork fabric with delicate green leaf accents — open, airy, and full of possibility.
